On Thursday, September 21 Puerto Rico was hit by the most powerful storm to hit the US territory in almost a century. The island of nearly 3.5 million Americans is devastated. The category for storm cross the island, toppling powerlines and cell phone towers and sending floodwaters cascading through the city streets, demolishing homes. Official said, the islands 1600 cell phone towers had been down and 85% of the above ground and underground phone and Internet cables were knocked down. Puerto Rico could not communicate and also all those who have relatives living there, not being able to check in and assert their safety. San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz says "we are looking at 4 to 6 months without electricity". Puerto Rican officials rush to activate 70,000 people living downstream of a failing dam.
William Miranda, Broker and Owner of Weichert, Realtors Madison Pierce, Born in Aguadilla Puerto Rico was crushed when he heard the news of Puerto Rico. The first day he could not get a hold of anyone. The second day, he still could not get a hold of anyone. Then we started seeing the news. We just knew it had to be worst than what the media was covering. We subscribed to many social media outlets trying to find out if any news. We started hearing of so many homes that we turned to nothing. The number of families in shelters. The fact that Hurricane Maria had taken everything in her course. Then reports that the entire island was without power. Beaches, rainforest, homes, families destroyed.
William wanted to get down to Aguadilla, to help! He wanted to asses the damage, find his loved ones and help his town, the town of Aguadilla. On September 27th, he left for Puerto Rico through an Angel! He flew to Florida and was able to hitch a ride on a chartered plane from Florida to a private airport in San Juan. He did his first FB Live and requested donations for him to take down himself. He knew that people were suffering and in need of basic supplies. We packaged everything and he was on his way. He took a satellite phone and a backpack.
Upon arrival he said he could not believe the devastation. Everything was burnt and knocked down. All the beautiful lush greenery once seen in Puerto Rico was no longer. He saw the pain in people's eyes, desperate for HELP. He went on and traveled to Aguadilla. The ride was long but he knew he had a purpose and he was determined to get there. Hot and humid the thirst started setting in. Knowing how precious water was he sipped his water.
We are encouraging donation items that are needed. These items will be delivered to families directly affected by the storm. Such items including diapers, baby food, batteries, first aid supplies and hygiene products. I believe that it is an amazing opportunity for the community to be able to assist the people of Puerto Rico.
